Issues relating to the diverse and multifaceted doctrinal questions are covered by three research programmes, a major one dealing with Esoteric and Tantric Buddhist teachings in Eastern Central Asia and adjacent Tibetan and Chinese regions, which is devoted to linking up the available material from the Tibetan, Chinese, Khotanese, Tangut, and Uyghur Buddhist traditions. This is followed by a survey of Abhidharma-, Madhyamaka- and Vijñānavāda literature, and eventually be rounded off by a excursus into the import of Huayan Buddhism in Eastern Central Asia with focus on its presence in the Tangut culture.
